Responsibilities:
MPs work in Central Government office located in Parliament House(Sansad), Delhi and represent their State.

The members of the Lok Sabha are elected popularly by constituencies in each of the Indian states and union territories, while members of the Rajya Sabha are elected indirectly by the state legislatures i.e. we elect the MLAs and the MLAs elect the Rajya Sabha members (who are nominated by their political party).
Rajya Sabha membership is limited to 250 members, and the present Rajya Sabha has 245 members. 233 members are elected by state assembly members and 12 are nominated by the President for their contributions to art, literature, science, and social services. The remainder of the body is elected by the state and territorial legislatures. Members sit for six-year terms, with one third of the members retiring every two years.

The political party which secures more than half the seats in the Lok Sabha forms the Government of India. If a specific party is unable to form government with their number of MPs, they may form a coalition government with a number of representatives members of other political parties. The Lok Sabha is the lower house and the Rajya Sabha is the upper house of the Indian Parliament (Bicameral).

The term period of an elected member of the Rajya Sabha is 6 years, while the member elected for the Lok Sabha is only for 5 years.

The maximum permitted strength of Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha is 552. This includes maximum 530 members to represent the constituencies and states, up to 20 members to represent the Union Territories (both chosen by direct elections) and not more than two members of the Anglo-Indian community to be nominated by the President of India. The majority party in the Lok Sabha chooses the Prime Minister of India.

Broad responsibilities of the Members of parliament of Lok Sabha are;
  • Legislative responsibility: To pass Laws of India in the Lok Sabha.
  • Oversight responsibility: To ensure that the executive (i.e. government) performs its duties satisfactorily.
  • Representative responsibility: To represent the views and aspirations of the people of their constituency in the Parliament of India (Lok Sabha).
  • Power of the purse responsibility: To approve and oversee the revenues and expenditures proposed by the government.
  • The Union Council of Ministers, who are also Members of Parliament have an additional responsibility of the executive as compared to those who are not in the Council of Ministers.
